On Thursday 24 November, I joined personal trainer (and Instagram star) ‘Clean Eating’ Alice Liveing for a fitness pop-up HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) class on top of the Gherkin. The class took place in Searcys, the members’ club at the top of London’s famous skyscraper, 30 St Mary Axe.
I must admit, the novelty of the location and the fantastic 360-degree views of London made the burpees and dynamic squats a little less painful (but no pain, no gain, right?). And Alice’s infectious motivation helped too.
In a room filled with mostly Lycra-clad females (from gym bunnies and Clean Eating Alice fans to those new-to-fitness), I found myself positioned towards the back next to a chap I later found out was Searcys’ head chef Barry Tonks.
At the end of the high-intensity training session, while we sampled healthy breakfast smoothies, fruit and granola (breakfast with a view), Alice revealed that we were here today to celebrate the launch of her new collaboration with Searcys the Gherkin.
Joining forces with Chef Tonks, Alice will co-host a six-week wellness pop-up at Searcys the Gherkin, starting in January 2017.
Specially created menus, devised by Head Chef Barry Tonks with Clean Eating Alice, will be available throughout the healthy pop-up – though less wholesome options will still be available. Choose from the Saints or Sinners menus in the New Year.
As well as the menu, Clean Eating Alice – who is releasing a new book, Eat Well Every Day, on 29 December 2016 – will host HIIT classes on the top floor of the Gherkin. All abilities are welcomed.
