The unlikely plus one? Rexy is the charming, recurring Coach mascot with cross-generational appeal, beloved by Zayn Malik, Selena Gomez, Kate Moss and more
Not since the Mesozoic Era has the Tyrannosaurus Rex been so ubiquitous, thanks to Coach’s covetable, colourful ‘Rexy’ mascot. Emblazoned on cashmere jumpers and leather totes for men and women, the playful, prehistoric motif has attracted an A-list club of dinosaur dressers including Zayn Malik, Winona Ryder, Kate Moss, James Franco, Jared Leto, Zoë Kravitz, Daisy Lowe and Selena Gomez, to name just a few.
Creative director Stuart Vevers designed the Rexy motif in 2015 as a cartoonish bag charm, followed by an instarsia knit sweater, which debuted on the S/S16 catwalk. It has since cropped up on leather bags, varsity jackets, scarves and sweatshirts, as well as a host of small leather goods ranging from passport covers to cutesy keyrings.
Since his appointment in 2013, Vevers has reinvented the heritage leather goods brand for a new generation, injecting a playful punch of youthful energy and embellishment, whilst honouring the original codes of the house. He took Coach to the catwalk for the first time in its 76-year history with the launch of ready-to-wear in 2014 and the brand is now synonymous with vintage-inspired shearling collars, varsity jackets, patchwork clothing and characterful knitwear, driven by American heritage and nostalgia.
Vevers will present his new Autumn/Winter 2017 collection this week in New York, marking a new chapter for Rexy and the gang. One things for sure though, the Coach T-rex trend is far from extinct.
