Dsquared2: Top Travel Tips From Dan & Dean Caten

Ahead of the launch of their first skiwear collection, Dsquared2 founders and designer twins Dan and Dean Caten talk travel tips, hitting the slopes and haunts closer to home in Notting Hill

When one thinks of a fashion icon, footballers can more often than not be found at the top of a best-dressed list. While David Beckham may have debuted a few daring hairstyles in his time (along with some questionable sarong choices – the less said about that the better), nowadays Becks is no stranger to a fashion show and his compatriots on the pitch have been known to step a similar sartorial line. So it didn’t come as much of a surprise when the Manchester City team appeared at their local airport decked head-to-toe in a Dsquared2 ensemble. “We’ve always had a strong connection with sports, especially with football,” the brand’s founders (and identical twins) Dan and Dean Caten explain. “We did our first collaboration with Juventus F.C. in 2006 followed by a collaboration with FC Barcelona in 2009. We also dressed Team Canada at the Rio Olympics 2016.”

The wardrobes of the athletic A-list ticked off, the pair has turned to another popular pursuit for inspiration: skiing. Spurred on by their love of winter sports, they’ve launched a line of skiwear for men and women, comprising parka jackets in camouflage or lumberjack prints, jumpsuits with maple leaf-embellished braces and waterproof denim in faded, patchwork and acid wash styles. Here the brothers discuss conquering the slopes, their top travel destinations and why Notting Hill will always be home.

On their skiwear collection...

We have always loved the idea that Dsquared2 could be the coolest look that you wear for your winter activities. When we thought of it, we felt electric and decided to go for it. We used to imagine skiers and snowboarders on the slopes wearing Dsquared2 jackets, trousers and accessories and thought it would be so great. We decided to create something that could be innovative and distinctive at the same time, so we matched our style with functionality and that was it: the new Dsquared2 collection was born!

On conquering the slopes...

We actually love to snowboard; it’s more fun and crazier than skiing – it gives us so much more adrenaline. We enjoy spending our winter free time in the mountains; taking a rest in such a relaxing and charming atmosphere and breathing the clean air is so magical. We love the Alps and our favourite spots are Cervinia and St Moritz. We feel at home there, especially in St Moritz where we have a boutique. We’re so excited that a new ski season is starting.

On travelling...

Our work gives us the chance to visit many places in the world. We have been travelling so much this year in particular, to São Paulo, Madrid, Los Angeles, Singapore, and we have passed through Miami and New York. We travel at least two to three times a month so we’re always ready to pack our bags and go from one place to another. Travelling makes you more open-minded than you normally are.

On their favourite destination...

Vacation wise, our favourite place to visit is Mykonos. We visited for the first time around 17 years ago and we totally fell in love with it, so now we go back every summer. We know every single corner. We love the people, the atmosphere of the island, the sun and the crystal clear water. Psarou Beach is our favourite place to watch the sunset.

On their favourite hotel...

We really feel at home at Hotel Fasano, a fabulous place located on Rio de Janeiro’s legendary Ipanema Beach; its interiors pay homage to the golden age of bossa nova. When we’re there we have the chance to relax, starting with a great treatment at the Renata de Abreu Spa and a wonderful swim in the infinity pool. This is followed by a drink at the pool bar, where we normally have a freshly squeezed orange juice while admiring the panoramic views of Arpoador and the Corcovado mountain.

On their best travel tips...

We believe there are a few rules to follow when you’re on holiday: try to switch off your phone, do things you like, spend some time with your friends and family, eat well and practise your favourite sports. To avoid suffering from jet lag, have a swim in a pool or get a massage from a spa – nothing makes you feel better or fresher.

On childhood holidays...

When we were kids, we loved to stay in touch with nature. This is the reason why we would spend our holidays camping; we couldn’t wait to pack our bags and get ready for exciting adventures.

On travelling attire...

When you travel, you should wear something comfortable, but remember: always be stylish. Wear a shirt, denim and a pair of trainers, and don’t neglect the bag. Our favourite is our Twin Zip, which is perfect for these occasions. Our other travel essentials are our phones, sunglasses, a pair of jeans and a white shirt.

On international style...

When it comes to fashion, every city has its peculiarities that are determined by its culture. It is always very interesting to have a walk around each city that you go to and get inspired by the people, the shop windows, the music, the arts... everything!

On shopping abroad...

We love hunting for furniture. It can be anywhere that inspires us, from Miami to Milan, passing through Tokyo or Paris. As we travel a lot, we always try to find a little time to go to antiques markets or auctions. Then, if we see something online that matches perfectly with our home’s decor, we buy it.

On their favourite exhibition...

We are always excited to attend Art Basel in Miami, where we get the chance to admire many beautiful art pieces, but we can’t wait to see the Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Graffiti and Late Works exhibition at the Museo delle Culture in Milan, too.

On their favourite city...

We have lived in many interesting places in the world, such as Canada, New York and Milan, but we couldn’t live anywhere else other than where we are now: London. It’s pure experimentation; young, cool, innovative and the trends are inspired by street style or by edgy, artistic movements. Plus, our mum is English so we feel at home here.

On Notting Hill...

We love the positive vibes that there are in this area; the people, the cafés, the gardens, the flowers, everything.London is so inspiring. We also enjoy staying at home, having a relaxing bath and then cooking something while listening to great music. We often end the evening watching a movie with a glass of wine.

On their Co-Ed Show...

This January marks the first time that we’re doing a fashion show which includes both men and women. We are very excited, but working hard because it’s so challenging. We can’t wait to present both collections on the same catwalk.
