We celebrate London’s most innovative and bedazzling Christmas trees
Featuring a Nordic pine tree specially grown in Scotland, The Ritz has once again created a magical Christmas display fit for a fairytale. The grand centrepiece is decorated with opulent baubles, ceramic cherubs and a whopping 6,500 twinkling lights. Look out for further yuletide trimmings including decadent wreathes by florist Paul Thomas and smaller trees placed in each hotel room and dotted along the corridors.

This is the first year that the Connaught is exhibiting a Christmas tree, and it has set the bar high by enlisting Damien Hirst to create a wonderfully witty and imaginative design that features 300 ornaments including giant medicine bottles, gilded medical instruments, garlands of pink sausages and white doves. “The Christmas tree is a celebration of togetherness, a joyful symbol of hope and love,” said Hirst. “For the decorations, I wanted to reference some of the amazing things that give us hope in the world today.”

The Savoy and British fine jeweller Boodles have teamed up to create a pink-perfect Christmas tree, festooned with candy-coloured bespoke decorations that incorporate motifs taken from the ‘Blossom’ fine jewellery collection, including bows, crackers and shimmering baubles. To further celebrate the collaboration, the American Bar and Savoy pastry team have created a Boodles-inspired pink cocktail. Cheers to that!

Burberry’s Christopher Bailey has designed a dazzling, metallic Christmas tree for Claridge’s, created using 100 umbrellas. The high-tech design also features 77,000 individual lights which are triggered by human movement, sending thousands of twinkling beams across the hotel lobby each time a guest interacts with the tree. "We wanted the tree to reflect the playfulness of the season with a little bit of the English weather thrown in," said Bailey. "I also love the idea that the tree comes to life as guests pass by."

Continuing the hotel's theme of East-meets-West, the Shangri-La Christmas tree has been inspired by China’s mythical traditions and romantic legends in collaboration with Shanghai Tang. One decoration is based on the Hulu, an ancient fruit, and represents good fortune and protection, while the Double Fish is a symbol of love, harmony and abundance. The tree is also decked with flowers courtesy of the hotel’s florist, Laura Kuy and topped with a golden star.

Located on the 31st floor of The Shard, Aqua has partnered with Dame Vivienne Westwood to create a spectacular Christmas tree in collaboration with rainforest protection charity Cool Earth. Decorations include delicate fairy lights and festive beaded garlands created by a women’s cooperative in the Awajún community. To top it off, the tree is cocooned in lace patchwork, symbolising the importance to protect the rainforest. The restaurant will also feature a special chocolate dessert and Johnnie Walker Blue Label cocktail to raise funds for Cool Earth.
