The National Portrait Gala 2017

A night of glamour at the Gallery: the Duchess of Cambridge, Alexa Chung and Rosamund Pike were among guests at the opulent Portrait Gala in London on Tuesday 28 March 2017

London’s National Portrait Gala is renowned for its famous faces. Last night however, there were considerably more within the gallery’s historic walls, as the crème of London’s high society gathered for the annual Portrait Gala, sponsored by William & Son.

The Duchess of Cambridge undoubtedly stole the show for the evening in a bespoke Temperley floor-sweeping evening gown in emerald lace, paired with Jimmy Choo sandals. Kiki McDonough ruby and citrine drop earrings and a gleaming clutch by Wilbur & Gussie added a touch of gilded glamour.

Now in its fourth year, the gala was hosted by Dr Nicholas Cullinan, director of the National Portrait Gallery and Alexa Chung, chair of the Portrait Gala committee, who arrived dressed in an off-shoulder Loewe dress with her dad as her date. Support was also provided by William Asprey of William & Son, the lead sponsor for this year's gala.

Esteemed guests included English actress Rosamund Pike, the Earl and Countess of Spencer, Princess Alia Al-Senussi, Laura Bailey, Juergen Teller, Mark Hix, Wendy Yu and Samantha Cameron, just to name a few.

Guests were given free rein of the gallery, of which The Duchess has held the position of patron since 2012. A champagne reception was followed by a grand dinner, with a live performance by Laura Mvula and an auction of exclusive artworks including ten unique masks created especially for the event by designers including Dame Vivienne Westwood, Philip Treacy and Maggi Hambling.

It was an opulent evening of art-gazing, grand dresses, live music and entertainment that brought together revered figures from the fields of art and culture in order to raise funds to support the Gallery’s future work.

William & Son created an exclusive, aquamarine fine jewellery collection to mark the occasion, which you can read all about HERE
